Hopeless Romantics

“It’s nice to sit back, close your eyes, and wonder about who you are, what you want, and why you feel the way you feel. Hopelessly being in hope about life is pretty fun when you get to take a breather and manifest; romanticizing isn’t so much running in grassy fields as it is idealizing for the right start to your day. Of course there’s going to be delulu-ness but it’s all in good moderation :)”

There will be a new trail mix of songs every week, interjected with full album listening parties. Calle 54

Hector Ruiz

It was early 2000, I was about 17 years old and I used to stay up late watching random movies on TV. One night a documentary about Latin American immigrants in the Bronx caught my attention. The movie was called Calle 54, and it screened the creation of Latin Jazz by a group of renegade kids, who intending to look for their roots, mixed the music from their homelands with Jazz. That night I started to listen to Paquito D´ Rivera, Cachao, Jerry González, and Gato Barbieri; as well as to reflect on how music could be a pure manifestation of community. In this show, we will revisit some of the music that migrated with people, using the sound as a vessel to speak about the experiences and struggles of communities in the US and beyond its borders.

I love how over the years, mixing music has evolved and we get to live in the most silliest era of EDM-- From DJ Mandi to 100 gecs to Shadow Wizard Money Gang. If you're up late doing homework and you're struggling to pick a song to match your vibe, just listen to the radio. Listen to my radio.. listen. listen to my radio.

Fridays, 5pm
